Overview

About Short-Term Health Insurance

Short-term health insurance provides temporary medical coverage during gaps in employer-sponsored or marketplace coverage. These plans can be an affordable bridge option, but carry important limitations that all consumers must understand before purchasing.

What We Can Help With

  • Temporary coverage during employment transitions or waiting periods
  • Typically lower premiums than ACA marketplace plans
  • Coverage terms vary by carrier and state; generally under 12 months in Texas
  • May include coverage for doctor visits, urgent care, and hospitalizations
  • Enrollment is available year-round (not subject to open enrollment periods)

REQUIRED DISCLOSURE: IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE: Short-term health insurance plans are NOT ACA-compliant minimum essential coverage. These plans may: (1) exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions; (2) have limited benefits and annual or lifetime benefit caps; (3) not cover preventive care, maternity, mental health, or prescription drugs; and (4) not satisfy ACA minimum essential coverage requirements. In Texas, short-term plans are currently limited to initial terms of less than 12 months. Review all plan documents, exclusions, and limitations carefully before purchasing. Do not cancel existing ACA-compliant coverage before consulting a licensed agent.
